Whitby Denim Gansey Kit

Whitby is a small town built around the estuary of the River Esk.  It has a famous Abbey and from here, Captain Cook sailed on his voyage of discovery to Australia in 1768.  It still has a busy fishing fleet and the town has grown up on both sides of the harbour.  The knitting stitches in each gansey were chosen to represent some of the everyday things in the lives of the fisherfolk.  Thus the triangles represent the ships flags, the cables mean ropes and the vertical bands reminded them of the 199 steps up to the Abbey on the hill.
