Flamborough 5 ply gansey Kit

Flamborough is an old Viking settlement whose people have always been very close to the sea.  Until tourism became important, the sea had provided the  main livelihood for its families.  The knitting tradition is still strong here and the women are proud of their family patterns.  They are elaborate and distinctive but there is a strong similarity amongst them which makes them easy to recognise.  The diamond represents the fishing nets.  These are shown empty in this design, on the way out to the fishing grounds but sometimes they are knitted in moss stitch which means they are full and returning home.  The cables are ropes and the moss stitch side panels are the pebbles on the shore.
