A fisherman’s gansey is a hard-wearing, 5 ply, pure wool sweater worn by fishermen around the coast of Britain for many years.
Essentially a tough, weatherproof garment in navy blue, it developed into a tradition with a variety of fascinating local family patterns.
Garments are knitted in the round on 5 needles or circular needles if preferred, and there are no seams.
Wool comes in balls of 100g and is supplied in the 1kg packet, which is enough to complete most sizes unless a very large and heavily patterned design is needed.
Kits include your chosen pattern and 1kg of 5 ply wool.
If you want to know how our ancestors knitted garments, this is an interesting project and you will get a fabulous garment at the end of it.
